CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT THE PROPER READING ON THE DASH METER SHOULD BE FOR NORMAL GENERATOR OPERATION?

This is a somewhat inaccurate gauge, and as such generalizes. The hand should be into the charging zone above idling rpm's, centered at idling, into the discharge zone idling with lights on. Of course if the battery charge is low the relative charging rate is higher and reflectd by the ammeter hand being further into the charging zone. A handheld ammeter(VOM) w/shunt may be used to obtain an accurate charging current.
