Rear end transmission TE20

I am about o dismantle the rear axle, left hand side of the tractor as the tranmission has failed to the main wheels. The main shaft visible from the PTO lever panel rotates okay when put in gear. Does any body have any insight as to what I should be looking for in the rear axle, i.e. where the likely point of failure is?

The tractor was parked under its own power and the next time I tried to move it ... nothing. The tractor was not put under any load and no noises were heard last time it moved. It just didn't move the next time I tried to use it.

Any advice appreciated. I can't help but feel this is something simple and I am missing it.

If you take off the hydraulic lift cover you may be able to see what's going on, and you wouldn't have to drain much fluid to do that. Although my bet is you'll be draining all the fluid anyway...
Also just wanted to throw in that the rear support area for the pinion gear bearing can break; I had that happen. Only solution there is a new differential case, not news you want to hear I'm sure. And the pinion and crown gears on the earlier tractors were smaller and prone to getting chewed up; you could have some missing teeth, although you would have expected to hear something in that case.

the rear end will not brake by just sitting! and if your top shaft is turning are you real sure it's going to the rear end? i saw one that the spline was wore out but it made a grinding sound. if i were you i would pull the right axele housing [sitting on tractor] that way you can see the rear end ring an pinion gear on the left you don't see much. drain all the rear end oil first [over night]

Phil to pull your axles support the rear,remove wheels, brake drums,retaining bolts for axles and pull out axles. You will need to drain some of your trans oil. If it is a broken axle this be easy to repair compared to the rearend split. Your axle could of failed in the last few yards the tractor moved before being parked and not of heard or felt anything.

Hiya Phil - as you can see, I may be 'back' again! But am logging on in a subversive manner, Heh, Heh, and will not be as regular a contributor as before.

My guess would be a broken half shaft - the earlier TEs/TOs had weaker half shafts than the later ones, I think the changeover came around the 200,000 mark - but I am sure someone will remember the exact number!!!!

If a half shaft breaks, drive will automatically be given to the wheel that offers least resistance - ie the one with the broken half shaft (or the one that spins in the mud when you get in the slippery stuff and everything works).

Finding out which side is broken is tougher - as no matter which wheel you turn, the drive shaft will not rotate - as the broken shaft will rotate first.

Flip a coin - or look to see if one wheel wobbles a bit when the tractor is towed, the slight wobble should be on the wheel with the broken half shaft.
