TO-30 won't start after fuel dump

Thnaks for the advice and great feedback. I've had my 1952 TO-30 for about two months now and love it even more than when I got it.

I'm having a problem at the moment. After an hour or so of running, I stopped to take a break. While I wasn't looking, the sneaky 1 1/2" "tube" that is attached to the rear of the carb unit slipped off and the gas flowed out 'til empty.

I replaced the connections on either end of that tube with new parts that seem to be fine. Now I can't get the engine to start. I'm getting spark, fuel seems to be flowing.

It was 50 degrees when this happened last week, and it is now about 1 degree outside when I finally fixed it. I wonder if I could have gotten enough condensation in there to muck up the works?

Any ideas?

Hi, Brian,

I had a similar problem with my TO-20 this summer...and it was driving me INSANE! Fuel kept leaking past the needle in the carb- which sounds like your problem. I had a carb on that was only 9 months old. I'd take it apart, clean out the float/needle area (once I lost the needle and had to pay $30 for a new one!), put 'er back together...and she'd be good for an hour or two- then the same thing would happen again. I adjusted the float level...to no avail, it would still flood out. In desperation, I took the gas tank off, and took it to a radiator shop to be boiled out- and that solved my problem. Even though I had three fuel filters in the line, grit was getting past them, and making the float needle stick open. Boiling the tank was the only cure. So, if you find your float isn't closing all the way, and no matter how many times you clean it, it still does the same thing..... get the tank cleaned out.

Thanks for all the excellent advice.

I do have a rusty tank and three filters - so I'll look into that as soon as I get the engine to start again. I intend to remove and clean and check out the "vapor lock" - stuck needle idea as soon as the temps come up above freezing (I'm in Northern New Hampshire). I owned an old MG with dual carbs, so this is not entirely unfamiliar terrain.

The worst part of all of this is that the tractor is sitting outdoors, catty-corner in front of my garage and it has snowed a ton here already. It's in just the wrong position to tow it out of the way. I'm really looking forward to driving her back into the garage.

Brian,

I had the same problem after doing some carb work. I had fuel in the glass filter bowl but the tractor would not start. My dad happened by and removed the filter bowl to have a look. After he reinstalled, she fired right up. There must have been a vacuum or something in the filter bowl area. Give it a try.

Hope this helps! Great site!
John

(My TO-35 is stuck in 3rd gear,I found some other's the same problem.)

Brian
you probably have a tsx458 carb on your tractor to be sure there is a metal tab on the side of the carb as you look at it ,you may have to scrape the paint to be sure, anyway if you decide to use a rebuild kit this is a fairly easy job ,just disco from the manifold ,disco the governor and choke linkage, disco the fuel line feed, when you have the carb on the bench take off the four screws and seperate the top part fom the bottom, buy a gallon of good carb cleaner from Napa and soak the whole thing for 24 hours ,now care fully take it all apart choke plate trottle plate shafts etc keep all the old pieces you may have to reuse some ,start to rebuild, new choke spring etc new gaskets tighten everything evenly but dont over do it look in this site archives for the final settings you only need two ,the idle and the main jet,you will feel good when it starts ,i am writing this from memory as i just did mine two months ago, sorry this took so long ,i am a better mechanic than i am a typist,i get my parts from Pittsburg tractor in Texas ask for Jan she is very helpfull.Good luck

Be sure to check and see if the gas got down into the oil (it fills up the intake manifold, then runs down past the valves into the cylinders and past the rings into the crankcase). If so, the oil will need to be changed, of course, so the thinned out oil doesn't cause wear damage. Wish you the best. Have a great Christmas Season and Happy New Year.

Hi Brian,
Sounds like your float valve isn't cutting off the flow of gas to the carb, not a good thing. Same situation was on the Farmall board this past week. Gas supply might approximately equal gas requirement while running under load, concealing the problem, but at idle the tractor would flood and die and be difficult or impossible to start again, just what you experienced.
My guess is that the needle has slipped its retainer spring and taken a dive to the bottom of the carburetor float bowl. I got a carb rebuild kit for my TE-20's Marvel-Schebler carb at NAPA for about $20, and it included a complete new needle valve assembly.
Not so nice to work on in zero-degree weather -- better bring the tractor in behind the kitchen stove to keep warm while having a look at it! Good luck! Tex

Look for grit in the needle and seat mechanism ( on the inlet of the fuel bowl) Your carb is flooding and fuel should not be coming out of the air intake tube. As a quick fix give the bowl a couple of taps with a spanner but make sure you clean the fuel bowl properly. A flooding carb is dangerous.
