Good-day, Just bought my first tractor and it stops running after about 30 minutes. Allow it to cool for 10 min, then will run again for about 10 mins etc. When it starts to stop I can release PTO and the engine goes back to normal revs, But after a short time still stops. Orginally it had no OIL but have now put this in. Got a manual and have checked the fuel and other obvious things, and hope that it isn't a seized motor fault that happens when motor gets warm. Any idea for a new hobby farmer.

Tks for all your help(and have a good xmas dinner too).
Have replaced coil, condenser, points and plugs. Runs a lot better, and now stops after 30 min.
It's HOT, and water boiling out of overflow tube.
Have looked at the archives and got a stack of checks to do re-overheating. And will start with the stat and do the vinegar clean today.
One trick I have learned is when the grey starts to splutter after 10 mins I pull out the choke for a few sec's and then all it ok and motor keeps working untill the 30 min mark(when it is then out of water) Now on holidays and have time to play with her.

I had the same problem.

Mine turned out to be insufficient fuel getting to the carb. When hot what fuel was getting through was evaporating. I removed the cutoff valve in the fuel line and replaced with a manual tap.

Check the flow into the carb by removing the fuel line and see how much fuel is getting through

Hi Grant,
I always suspect the same cause for this syndrome: rust flakes building up in the carburetor float bowl. A thick layer prevents the float from dropping, so the float valve can't open properly. Just a thin dribble through the valve is enough to keep the tractor idling, but it cuts out or dies under a load. Gravity urges these pesky little specks to migrate from from the rusty tank down the fuel line and make their home at the lowest point in the system, the float bowl. I installed an inline fuel filter to solve this problem, and if I remember to change the filter every 6 months, my TE20 runs fine. Good luck! Tex

I am having a similar problem. I have been told that it is probally a bad coil and or resistor. I have switched both and the points just in case. THe rotor and cap look good on mine but that could be part of your issue as well. I am not sure if this has fixed my issue as I have broken the starter nose some how and am looking for help to figure out why 2nd nose in 7 months. I am a hobby farmer also.

when it stops take coil wire off of dist cap and lay near the block crank engine over and observe if you have spark what you describe sounds most like the coil getting hot. You can just switch coils and try it that way other things to check are wires for breaks and the wire going into the distributor regards

Since the condition only happens hot, and the run time decreases with each start, I would blame secondary ignition first. Check, as mentioned before, the fire from the coil wire. It isnt expensive to replace the coil, resistor, and the points & condenser and remove all ignition doubt. Hate to wave parts at a machine but without specs. for resistance readings, it's probably the best way out. Additionally, check to see if the ignition switch is getting too hot. Not a common problem, but I have had it happen. Good luck.
