TO-20 Hydraulic lift goes up but not down

I recently drained all the fluid out of the three drain holes in the transmission, lift, and differential housings. I replaced with 6 gallons of Massey Ferguson 90 weight GL1 (I think it is their 1130 spec stuff, but the empty jugs and I are 70 miles apart just now). There was a period of a week or two between the time I drained the units and the time I refilled them, and then another week or so until I actually started the tractor motor again. When I did start it (on a chilly day of about 45 degrees F) the lift arms, which had been all the way down, went right up. I then worked the lift lever and found that while they had gone up well enough, they wouldn't go back down. Since it all worked perfectly well before I drained it out, I don't know whether this is some "normal" behaviour when one refills the system, or if I've just put myself in a world of trouble. Any thoughts?

Well, it was a lot easier than I expected. I had just put the yoke and control spring back in place temporarily after cleaning things up, and hadn't adjusted it. I tried again this morning to see if the lift arms would drop down when they should. Then I noticed a large gap between the end of the control spring and the back of the yoke. So, I pulled the pin out and began to tighten up the yoke....as I tightened it the lift arms began to drop. Once it was adjusted, all worked well. None of the manuals say that the control spring must be in or near correct adjustment for the lift arms to drop...

Thanks for your comments, I was about to act on them when this lucky discovery came my way.

Steve,
Did you have some weight on the arms, such as an implement? If not the arms will probably not move or move very fast at that temperature. At least that has been my experience.

Phil,

I'd wondered about that. No, there was no weight on the arms. When I get back home on Friday I'm going to try to hook up an implement, but...if I can't get the arms down, how do I hook up an implement?

just put your body weight on the arms they will go down easily
