First why are you converting to 12 volt. If it is for easier starting save your self a lot of time and money just go and get yourself a 8 volt battery don't have to make brackets or change head light bulbs. the six volt generator will charge this and the whole system will look and work as original. Any automotive parts place will have or get you one.

Hi carman,
Posting a link to John Billingsley's wiring schematic. This site also has a helpful summary under Articles, titled "recommendation for 12 Volt Conversions.
When I converted my TE20 a couple of years ago, the hardest part was getting the bracket geometry right. I heartily recommend cutting a template out of cardboard or plywood to be sure you get a good fit(based on getting it WRONG the first time in 0.25" steel!). Since I couldn't find a diode to prevent discharge through my single-wire alternator, I installed a simple on-off switch between the alternator and the battery + pole.
I'll try to post a link separately to some photos of possible bracket configurations. One glimpse and you will get the idea.
Good luck! This is probably the greatest improvement you can make on a 6-volt tractor.

Here is a photo I copied from someone's site, linked from YT a couple of years ago. The lower arm of the bracket is secured to both the studs on the engine block to which the front axle yoke is attached.

Dear old, thanks for the back up. Sorry I forgot to mention the resistor, or a 12 v internally resistor coil.

When you get that alternator also pick up a ballast resistor to put in the coil wire. And yes the starter works very well on 12 volts as a matter of fact it will last longer on 12 volts then on 6 volts since it will only use half the amps to turn it that it did on 6. if you double the volts you cut down the amps by half.

I probably don't have the correct answers to your question, but if it were my unit I would get a delco alternator, take to the auto electric shop, tell them I want a one wire alt. set up, put it on my tractor and go. ... Please disegard this if you have any thoughts of retoration. Yes, the starter is very strong, and will handle 12v for short periods of time.
