Quick question on TO-20's and TO-30's

Do all TO-20's and TO-30's have the semi-live pto or as some of us call it, the "two-stage" clutch? Or do neither of these have it at all? Also, is there anything to especially look for when checking one out to buy, common problems or wear to check for? Also does anyone think one of these tractors could lift and support a roll of hay on the 3 point....for example, using this tractor to feed hay with or transporting hay? Thanks for any help to those may know any of this!!!

I have a to20 and so does my tire sales man and he uses his to pick up 1200lb. round bails. I would have never beleived it until I saw it. He has a bunch of weight on the front and it still wants to lift. I also have a clutch override on my pto and it saved me from hitting a few cars when brush hogging along the road of my property. for $25 its the best insurance I got other than the 3 point safety chains!

Alghough the tractors don't disengage like modern equipment, a little patience and planning for a turn beforehand will produce good results. Many fence posts have been knocked down by poor planing. Good luck & have fun. I read about "over riding clutches", but what fun would that be?

I believe that the TO-30 with a good hydraulic system can lift about 750 Lbs on the three point. I'm not sure you can steer the tractor with that kind of load on it unless you have front weights.
I certainly wouldn't recommend using these small tractors for that kind of work.

I think you'd be OK with a 4' bale, but not sure about a 5'. The three point can lift enough that the front wheels will come off the ground. It runs in my mind that this is about 1200 pounds but someone else here may have a more definitive answer.
When checking one out to buy I would pay special attention to the hydraulic system, mostly because they can be expensive to repair. Also if you can find out if a previous owner was using it as a skidder or similar - hard on the differential.

These two tractors do not have live pto, nor do they have a two stage clutch. You'll find excellent buying guidelines on Big Dean's website and in the "articles" here on the YT website.

Most of those tractors were mfg in the late 40s and early 50s. It would be safe to assume that they have been here. They didn't have a real work horse, before the MF35.

Did to. The TE-20-TO-20 and TO-30 were good working tractors. I speak from experiance.

these tractors probably did more work back in the 50's then some do today back then they only had one or two tractors that they used
