I am getting spark, but it looks like I am only getting gas in the first cylinder. I may have put to much engine grease on the cylinder walls (just a guess). Any thoughts?

Thanks for everyone's help, I got my TO30 running again today and just finished mowing 6 acres. Comedy of errors, valves were to loose which caused me to believe I was on the compression stroke when I timed it, but alas I was on the exhaust stroke. It is amazing how quickly it starts when it is timed properly. Thanks again this board is awesome!

There is a really easy way to adjust valves on 4 cylinder engines. Bring the engine to top dead center. At this time 4 valves should be closed, depending on the firing order,as to which 4. The valves that are closed will be 4 tallest valve springs. Set these to the required spec and rotate the engine 360 degrees and adjust the other 4. The other way, is to bring the engine to #1 compression stroke, adjust #1 and rotate through the firing order. Either of these will give an initial adjustment. Good luck, have fun.

I used the rule of 9 (subtracted # of compressed spring from nine and adjusted the resulting valve # to .015 on the valve stem side). I did not begin from any specific valve, does this matter? Thanks for your helpful suggestions this board has been so beneficial to me in the past.

Check the valve clearence, as everyone says. If you only got one push rod mixed up it could change a lot. No matter, you need to make sure they're all ok anyway at this point. Good luck, and have fun.

Did you reset the valves, youmay have some that aren'tcloseing all the way. Check your compressionyou also may not have gotten the head gasket on right. Also as far as the greasein the cylinders, I have had themstarton a lot of oil in the cylinders you just can't see much of the tractor when they start because of the smoke. Hope this helps you some

Make sure you manifold is on tight and that your carb, expecially the float/needle valve, is properly adjusted. As old says, check your valve lash also.

The majority of the time the valves are adjusted too tight, or the pushrods are not seated properly following head removal. I've done it myself.
