Alvin, you wrote on 11/13/03 as a response to "RE: More question on TO-35, hours of use" that the To-35 with the 3-cyl Perkins diesel was worth more than one with 4cyl gas or 4 cylinder Perkins. Why is that? Are they better for some reason or are they just harder to find. I am in the market for another Fergie to restore. I had a 1954 TO-30 that I had restored top to bottom and front to back. I truly loved that little tractor, the PTO not being live was a pain sometimes, but I always enjoyed bush-hogging with it. I ended up selling it to get my little brother out of some trouble he was in, and I have regretted it every since. I sold it to a used tractor dealer in my area and he gave 3500.00 for it if that tells you what kind of shape it was in. I am looking for another one to buy to play with and thought I wanted a MF65 diesel, but it don't sound like it after what I've read. I know that I want live PTO on my next one, don't care if its gas or diesel, but if its diesel I would prefer closer to about 40 hp. Anyone that has any suggestions, I more than welcome them, and appreciate all replies. Thanks, Jim

Not completely familiar with 3 cyl. Perkins, but I can give some insight to 3 cyl. in general and diesel in general. A 3 cylinder engine, like a 5 cylinder engine is smoother because of the number of main bearings opposed to the number of rod bearings. A diesel requires more maintenance, but given proper care will outlast a gas engine by at least double. I have a to20 and at least, so far am happy with the continental gas engine for a small piece of land like mine. Good luck& have fun.

Alvin, I have to ask why do you have the interest in the diesel engine? I have always been told they are or can be very dependable engines, can take more hours than a gas engine and cheaper fuel. The down side is they can be tempermental,& hard to start. If you are a hobby farmer and won't be useing the tractor on a daily basis a gas engine may be best for you. What is it you will be useing the tractor for. I have a TO 35 w/o live power and have no problem bushhogging and backblading.

I never saw a 35MF with a 4cyl Perkins diesel. The continnel gas is ok, but the 3cyl Perkins diesel is a tough one to beat and unlike a gas engine will continue working hard even after begging for an overhaul, sometimes for years. Just give it a shot of either, and go. I steer clear of the 4cyl continnel diesel.
