Rory the way I see it, if an additive was needed it would be for sale everywhere and advertised like the dickens.

Rory:
I'm currently using regular unleaded gasoline 87 octane, and have added a lead substitue with the trade name of "CD-2" at the rate of 1oz. per ten gallons, I have also added a product known as "Sta-Bil" at the rate of 1oz per 5 gallons as I do not run my TO-35 regularly. Both of these products should be readliy available at most auto supply stores. I got mine at Wal Mart. Give it a try!

What if no additives are used, does there exist a potential for problems?

Roger,
without the lead, serious damage may be caused to the valve seatings.

Not really. Remember we are runnning little engines at 6.1:1 compression ratio. Lead was really necessary for high compression engines.
9.5:1 up to 12;1. Our little guys never know the difference. 87 octane is probably more than they need. They think they are in tall cotton with 87 octane. Relax.

Our tractors were built duing a time before unleaded fuels were available widely. They were designed to run on "78 octane" fuel (try finding that) with lead additives. In the short run, using unleaded fuel should not pose serious problems, however long term use, hard use, or prolonged use under extreme conditions can and will lead to valve related failures. Given the relative low cost of modern day synthetic lead substitue additives, why take a chance? The STA-BIl additve helps to prevent gum build up in the fuel system due to prolonged low or non usage. You be the judge, but mine will have the "vitamins!" If you are interested, I can e-mail you a "scan" of the page in my owners manual dealing with the engines, and their fuel requirements, you need only ask. . . . Jim

Jim,
Sure! my info comes from a petroleum engineer out at work. I bent his ear and he bent my ear for roughly and hour on the subject. I gave him the specs on the tractor and he assured me there was nothing to sweat. Could be he didn't know what he was talking about. I'd definitely like to see the info you've got. I'm not the least bit interested in giving out bad info. If there is more to this than I know, I want to learn it.

Does the TO-20 have hardened valve seats? My TO-30 had them. The lead serves two purposes, to prevent spark knocking and to prevent valve seat recession . The lead acts as a lube to prevent valve seat erosion in cast iron seats. It is possible to machine/refit hardened seats into an older head. Not much lead is needed, less than it takes to cure the spark knock.
