The starter ring on the flywheel started to back off, went ahead and removed it.I turned it around and reinstalled it,however if not sure I have it on correctly.Do they have a starter engage side or does it make any difference?Appreciate any help someone could give me.

My ring gear was welded to my flywheel. Sounds like a quite ubiquitous problem!

Sounds like whoever had your tractor before you had the problem of the gear coming loose. Not a good way to fix it I would have thought.

Thanks to those who replied to my question. It was evident that the ring was on backwards before I split the tractor because the bevel was to the rear.I now have it with the bevel towards the front or starter engaging gear.I will find a way to pin it on ,the gear does not have any wear on it so to speak and the ring is in good shape on the bevel side.Probably will have more questions as I reassemble my TO-20.Working on the hydraulics now, found a twisted PTO shaft and replaced it with a new shaft. Also have replaced clutch plate with new heavier duty type. Thanks again for your assistance.

My ring gear came off and when I split the tractor, it was apparent that it had come off before and someone had welded it back on. Or at least they made an attempt to. The service manual I have alluded to a differant flywheel/ring gear that was available as a replacement if the ring gear came off, so apparently Harry and the boys were aware of the problem. It should have been apparent in the basic design. Every time the starter drive is engaged it strikes the ring gear in the rearward direction, eventualy knocking it off the flywheel.I found a used one with the modification and replaced my old one with it. The modification had the ring gear pressed on from the fron with a small lip machined at the rear edge flywheel to prevent the starter drive from knocking the ring gear off. I haven't had a problem with it since and do not expect to. I only wonder why they designed it the way they did in the first place.

I believe John gave you good info. My ring gear slipped off the backside also. Here is what I did. I drilled about 6 or 8 evenly spaced holes around the flywheel near the ring gear and now hold the ring gear with tapped holes with 5/16 bolts with washers. I either bent the washers or ground one side off a bit . This was done about 20 years ago and has worked fine ever since Later TO's had the ring gear installed from the opposite side so it would be impossible for the starter to work the ring gear off.

I wonder if we had different flywheels on our Z120 engines, I dont ever remember us having the gear come off like that although I can see why it happened with yours. Was the edge of the flywheel completely flat with no ridge on it at all to hold the gear on?

The very early TO 20 maybe below serial # 10282 had the ring gear installed on the wrong side of the shoulder on the flywheel. If the starter knocked the ring gear off slowly enough, the bell housing gets ground thru from the teeth on the flywheel. Never heard of a tractor actually getting sawed in half but I think it is possible.
Later flywheels had the shoulder moved towards the clutch so ring gear could no longer get knocked off flywheel from the starter.

Yes there is a right and wrong way to fit these starter rings. The side with the bevel on the teeth should be to the front of the flywheel so the starter can engage the drive easily. If its on the wrong way it will knock the ring off the flywheel eventually. Check the starter drive pinion for damage, that can cause the ring to come off the flywheel too, if its damaged at all, replace it. Once they come off, really you should fit a new one because as they are shrunk on obviously it wont be as tight a fit as it should be. You may get away with it you may not.
