Well Here's a place to start. With a test light If you check the + side of the coil, key on, it should be hot. When you crank the engine over using the key, the -side should blink rapidly. If no blink check the points. Use a screwdriver (w/ key on points closed) and break the the pionts open there should be a spark. if no sand them
I have had a condenser go out. Replace it it's cheap. If the ballast resistor is bad or you do not have one. It should still run. This will lead to shorter piont life. A lot of people remove them when they have a hard starting wore out engine.
Are your plugs fouled? If they are Champions and they are wet(fuel or oil) they are not going to fire.
Are you getting fuel?

Hi Chuck!
I spent a l-o-n-g afternoon trying to get my TE20 to run after a tuneup -- it would start, but run rough for a minute and then die. Finally I realized the distributor shaft on this model turns counterclockwise, not clockwise like every other engine I have ever messed with. Consequently I had plug wires 2 and 3 reversed on the distributor, so it was firing 1-2-4-3 when it was supposed to go 1-3-4-2. There is a little arrow stamped on the end of my Delco distrib shaft indicating the rotation direction -- just a suggestion, check yours out. Good luck!
Tex

.020 is about right for the point gap, but, she ain't gonna run with .020 plug gap. I go with .032 plug gap. Some of the IH operator's manuals had a misprint with the numbers backward of .023. They won't run on that either. You are porbably supposed to have a ballast resistor, The coil will have that info on it.

I have a wiring diagram for that tractor, you will need to send me an email address to send it to though. Should be .022" for the points and .025" for the plugs

I have the same tractor and it went under salt water in hurricane Isabel. I have several things that will/have been replaced. I have not been able to to find a wiring diagram for it. Any Help would be much appreciated.
