TO-35 Hydraulic leak

My TO-35 Deluxe has been a pleasure to run this season. Last time out however, I noticed hydraulic oil leaking out the bottom of the bell housing where the drain hole is. Could this be a bad seal around the transmission / pto shaft? How critical is it to repair, and how can I better diagnose the situation? Any thoughts from the experts, any information would be appreciated.

Thanks for your input! Iguess I should have replaced that seal while I had the tractor split last year when I overhauled the engine. I had even bought the seal, but it looked like a very invoved project; and I chose to let it go. I'll have to "read up" on the proceedure, and try to give it a "go" before grass mowing season rolls around agian here in the N.E. Thanks again:

Well obviously its better to repair the leak but as long as it isnt too bad you could leave it for a while till you have more time to repair it. You will have to take the engine out to get at it obviously thats the heavy part after that it a straight forward seal change. just make sure that the oil doesnt start building up inside the clutch housing, keep the drain hole clear, otherwise it will go on the clutch and make a bad job even worse.

It is likely to be either from engine rear crackshaft seal or from gearbox input shaft. You may be able to assess what the oil is. If its a diesel tractor engine oil would be black but if petrol that (hopefully) would not be so obvious. You might also get a better idea where it was coming from by taking the rectangular plate off underneath the bellhousing and having a look inside with a torch. Its not critical unless oil is pouring out but its theoretically possible for it to get onto clutch in which case you'd need to split tractor to repair - which is what you'd have to do anyway to repair leak. Small leak is probably just nuisance. Its unlikely to be the cause but you should check that engine breather is clear. If it isn't you will build up pressure in the crankcase that can force oil past a perfectly good seal. Could also be steering box oil but only if bottom of steering box is physically cracked. Most likely to be engine rear oil seal.
