Got some great info from John (UK) about how to address my loss of hydraulic pressure. I have a strong suspission that the top cover gasket has blown (could not find a replacment a few years ago so sealed it with some gasket paste). There is no external leakage at the point where the fluid enters the top cover so if the gasket has blow it must be spraying fluid back into the housing. The info I was given suggests that I remove the right hand inspection plate (facing the front of the tractor) and look for any leaks. Since the right hand inspection cover is on the same side as my suuspected leak I anticipate not being able to see anything! Should I therefore try and remove the left inspection cover? Iam not sure weather to do this since it has the leaver for engaging the pump atatched. If I was to remove it then I would obviously have to engadge the pump before hand and would have to have the pump running untill I replaced the inspection cover (Unless clutch in of corse). Which inspection plate should I remove, would I be able to see if the top cover gasket had blown from the right hand side or will I have to remove the left inspection plate?

Finally what is the correct torque for the top cover bolts?

Many thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike, Remove the left plate but put the pump and pto on gear before you do that, when you take the plate off you should be able to see the area from which the leak is coming....it could be the ram cylinder gasket or even the ram cylinder itself.....but use all new gaskets and NO gasket cement, if you use the correct gaskets you dont need it. When you take the side plate off you will have to put the bottom setscrew back in because if the oil level is correct it will run out of the bottom hole.when you put the plate back on just put the lever into the place where it would normally be in gear and you will be able to put it back on easily. I used to put the plate roughly in position with one setscrew in the front edge of it and move it till the lever drops in place...Dont forget if you are removing the top cover that you have to detach control valve from long fork first or you will break it...If you want more info post here again I have it marked so I will see it.

Take off the one with the dipstick. If oil is leaking unbder pressure it will be spraying everywhere and you'll see it ok. You may need to tilt tractor or drain some oil to get level below the bottom of inspection cover hole. If you take lowest bolt out you'll know its low enough if no oil is running out.
