Varnish in TO35 Gas Tank

Bought a TO35 that has been setting for 10 years (inside). The tank has the smell of mothballs, and there appears to be some varnish inside the tank. Has anyone ever cleaned out such a tank before? Would you use a heated water pressure system to wash it out and then dry it with a shop vac? Suggestions would be greately appreciated.

My TO-35 will run well for a few hours, and then suddenly, when I go up hill for instance, it sputters and stops. I unscrewed the brass fitting that connects the copper flanged gas line to the carburerator and the gas flow only sort of dripped, so I blew really hard on it, until I heard air bubbling in the gas tank. then, when I stopped blowing, the gas came out at a good flow and the tractor ran again. This has begun to happen all of the time, and I'm getting really tired of blowing and spitting. I'm wondering if there is junk in the gas tank that is clogging the fuel line. The glass fill bowl is clean. How can I get the stuff out of the gas tank? Should I buy a new gas tank, or buy some mint-flavored gasoline? my email is jill.flowers(and then the @ symbol)vanderbilt.edu

Might want to remove copper line and replace with automotive fuel line and an inline filter. Probably need new fitting on bowl and carb side to connect fuel line to. Total cost probably under $10. If that doesn't fix the problem then move on to more costly things like having the tank cleaned or replaced.

I don't think you need to get heroic with it. Drain it good. Put in good gas with some fuel stabilizer which you can get at any parts store. Run it for awhile. Refill it. By the third tank, it should be ok, unless it has rust.

After some thought I am going to put some lacquer thinner in it and work it around then flush it out with some clean gas and give it a try. It really doesn't look that bad just has the smell and a little varnish. May put an inline filter on it. Thanks for the help appreciate it.

Ought to try looking on www.deja.com and typing in something like "gas tank varnish". Lots of suggestions. If no rust and only talking about varnish then lacquer thinner seems to be popular. If only filter is a sediment bowl then you might want to add an automotive filter during the first two tanks of gas.
