I just recieved my Ferguson 1953 TO-30 yesterday.
While driving around the yard, I noticed everytime I pressed in the clutch all the way, it would take approx. 2 seconds before it would disengage the trans. Putting it into gear I have no problem with. It just seems to have a delay before stopping. Any assistance would be great.

OK, the clutch doesn't disengage... If it were a car, the pilot shaft bushing would be binding. Someone in fergieland tell me if it has a pilot bushing or not. I haven't bought a manual yet.

My TO-30 has a pilot bearing, not a bushing.

If the tractor has been sitting up for a long time, it may just need a good working out. Might just be some dirt or something causing the clutch to stick. I would rather have one stick than have one slip. I bet it is not too much.

I have had the problem occaisionally with my TO-30. Had it apart twice ( once to replace flywheel after ring gear came off and once to replace engine) and could not see anything apparently wrong with it either time. The clutch splines were clean and dry as were the splines on the transmission input shaft. Clutch plate and T/O bearing were new (inspection stamp still visible on clutch face). If I use it regularly, I doesn't seem to happen as often. I can't offer any fixes since I haven't figured it out myself. I seem to remember something in my owners manual about the length of the tranny input shaft, but I recently moved and have still not found the box with my manuals in it. Keep this forum posted if you come up with anything.

You have to rember, we have mechanical brakes. I think it was Ray who said his would skid the wheels. I havent gotten to that point yet, but a brake adjustment really helped my to20. Have fun.

I would suggest getting it good and hot then changing the fluid for starters. It will take 24 quarts because the trans, hydraulics and rear axle all share the smae fluid- 80 wt or GL-1. It should cost about $30.00. If your PTO seal leaks (mine did), during the fluid change would be a perfect time to fix it and maybe update the shaft to 1 and 3/8.

Clutch is proabbaly sticking. If you hit breaks it will disengage but to cure it you may need to split tractor and clean splines on gearbox input shaft - and it may still do it.

Are you running the tractor only or did you have a running bush hog on the back?

Was the trans. actually driving the wheels or did it take 2 seconds for the tractor to stop?

Jeff

I have a blade on the back and a loader on the front. I tried it again yesterday w/o doing nothing but driving it around, and not at first, but soon after driving it the clutch hesitated to stop the tractor.

After reading your last post I'm compelled to reply. The clutch is not designed to stop the tractor, simply to dis-engags the engine from the rest of the drive train. Only the brakes are designed to stop the tractor. Mine will coast forever without applying the brakes.

No, I didn't mean that it would STOP the tractor.
What I meant was that, even if I was going up hill, then it would still continue to move the tractor while the clutch was pressed.

Have you checked the adjustment. You might not be pushing the release lever in far enough to open the pressure plate far enough to release it.

Like Jeff said, details are needed to provide accurate advice. If the clutch is contaminated with oil(which holds dirt), and/or the flywheel is rusty, the clutch will act this way. I subscribe to the KISS principle, so the first thing I'd do is to ease up against a large tree and lightly slip the clutch until it just begins to get hot to try and burn off any oil and dirt that may be preventing the clutch from releasing. If this doesn't work, then you are looking at splitting the tractor and installing a new clutch. This is all assuming you're not using an impliment that pushes the tractor with the PTO.
