Starting TO35

Need a response from TO35 and/or Jerry/MT. The TO35 I have has not been started for 10 years. I rebuilt the carb and put in new plugs, points,cond., rotor and dist cap. Cleaned gas tank, and set time rough. Put oil in cylinders, along with change of oil and filter. Would you try starting engine or do something else before trying to start? Thanks for your help.

Jerry/MT and TO35 thanks for responding to my message. It will take me a week to complete the prep and to find the time to try and start the tractor. I will definitely let you know the outcome. May need some additional advice before completion. Thanks for your help.

Ray, How rough did you set the timing? Here's how I do it. I remove the #1 plug and rotate the engine yil it is on the compression stroke. Don't know what the timing is for yours but it is usually before top dead center (BTDC). Look at your timing marks and hand crank until the timing marks line up and # 1 is on compression stroke. Place a paper clip in the #1 plug wire boot, loosen the distributor, ground the paper clip, and rotate the ditributor until you hear the # 1 plug/paperclip fire. When it fires you are at the right timing. Rotate slowly so you don't pass it up. Then tighten doen the ditributor at the point where it just fires the plug/paperclip. This should get you close enought to get started and then you can check it with a timing light. Make sure you have antifreeze in the rad and, your airfilter isn't clogged then try to start it. Since you put oil in the cylinders, be prepared for some smoke. When you try to start, pull the throttle lever at about halfway open. You didn't say whether or not you tried to turn the engine since it hasn't run for a long period of time. I'm presuming it will turn over. Let us know how it goes.
