Silly Question on Changing Oil and Filter

Hi

I know this is a silly question but as a new boy on the block i will ask it anyway.

I have an old TEA 20 with external inclined oil filter. I want to change oil and filter .
Do I just undo the nut on the top of the filter casing and pull off casing (after emptying out oil of course) or is there more to it. I note there are a couple of other nuts on the side do I need to touch them ??

no just loosen the bolt on top and then you can unscrew the canister, the nut you call on top is actually a long bolt that goes the length of the canister, down the center inside , once it,s completely unscrewed it will pretty much fall off , dump out the oil take out the filter and check where the top of the canister goes in the grove there will be a rubber seal, you should get a new seal with your new filter,clean the cannister ,put in filter,new seal ,screw it on the bottom of the bolt when hand tight ,tighten the bolt a bit with a wrench,and your finished,the filter number for mine is napa 51302,probably the same for yours.

On the long bolt through the filter canister there is a plate at the bottom of the filter itself, you may find that is has stuck to the old filter make sure you have this plate in position next to the spring in the bottom of the canister, if you dont have this plate it will not filter the oil at all. It is quite common for this plate to be thrown out with the old filter.

There was a circlip holding the plate in place originally, if you look you will see the groove it sat in, on the long bolt, but in time and with some rough handling by people who dont really know what they are doing, the circlip comes off with the plate when the filter is pulled out of the canister. It happened quite often over here so I don't think it will be any different with you over there. Anyway just something else to look for.
