Today I took a long ride in the woods with my Tea. As I was tooling along on a logging road, it just quit, the engine died like I had turned the ignition switch off. I tightened the wire that goes from the coil to the distributor, checked the gas flow to the carb, checked the air going to the carb and then it started immediately. This is not the 1st time this tractor has done this. It does not seem to be running hot. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks Paul

The carbon-fiber wire from coil to distrib on my Audi once separated internally -- a pretty tricky fault to find. Use all copper and this won't happen!

Check all that everyone has said so far because its all possible and also it could be a condenser or a coil problem, usually a condenser though, only way to be sure is to replace it. once they cool off a little they are ok again, but always stop at the most awkward time.

My TO-20 was doing the same thing. I cleaned and retightened the connections at the ignition switch, coil and ditributor and it hasn't done it since. I think the oil, dirt, etc. hides a lot of loose connections.

When it shuts off, feel the ignition switch & see if it's hot. It shouldnt be... . Good luck.

Bullseye! This is the most common cause of engine problems. I once anguished through the same problem as Paul. I eventually found that the points wire connection thru the distributor housing was intermittently shorting.

check all the wires to see that none are wore thru at any place. Also note that normal automotive plug wires can be forced over the pins in the distributor cap to create a much more sealed and positive conection. I got a set for a slant six to make sure there were lots to choose from.
