It's a TEA 20, Petrol. I've got new points, distibutor cap, leads, plugs and rotor arm. and the air filter (oil bath) has been thoroughly cleaned and serviced.
The tractor will start OK and will run on low revs, although it seems to lack power.
It wil run on higher revs for 10-15 second, cough splutter (sometimes through the air filter) and then die. Within 10 seconds, it will start OK and then run on low revs until you rev it up again. I do not have a manual. How do I adjust and / or service the carby (as I think it's not getting enough fuel) & how do I check the timing??. Any help appreciated.

Hi Brian,
See my post above to the old professor. Sounds like fuel starvation from clogged lines/filters or a float bowl fullof rust particles. Good luck,
Tex

I did'nt see a condenser in your list of new components. Coil and condenser will heat up and cause a similar problem, especially the backfire through the intake. Good luck.

Brian, Have you checked the "secret filter" in the the carb inlet elbow? I'm not that familiar with the TE series but the TO's have them and they frequently clog up. There is also a filter just above the sediment bowl on the tank valve you'll need to check. There are a pair of screens in the tank side of the tank valve that can also clog. Make sure that the fuel tube to the carb is not restricted in some fashion. If you find nothing with these checks, you might try checking the float setting and the needle valve in the carb.
Hope this helps.

There is no "Secret" filter on a TEA, the fuel pipe goes straight into the top of the carb. I would check fuel flow out of tank, maybe even take the fuel bowl assy off the tank and check that the inlet filter is not damaged or full of debris. The idea of having that elbow or adaptor on the carb inlet was a good idea it saved the carb top from damage which happened frequently. The needle valve rarely gives trouble on the Zenith Carb, what usually happens is though it can leak but then it floods but that is not the problem you have.Make sure the settings are right on the jet screws...Main jet 21/2 turn out from fully closed, air screw 1 1/2 turns out from fully closed, adjust both till the motor runs smoothly.

John, I think that you can have a cruded up needle valve that restricts fuel inflow or the float setting can be set wrong (floats bent down toward bottom of the bowl) that can cause resticted fuel to the carb. It has been my experience that with these old machines, anything is possibele. (Murphy's Law (and Murphy lives) or is it Sod's Law?)

Jerry/MT

Errr Sods Law I think it is Jerry. The carb on the TEA is a Zenith very unlike the one on the TO, the float is not on a pivot, it just free floats, but I agree it could be crud in the needle valve but usually on the Zenith it just allows to carb to flood over and doesn't restrict the flow, BUT that doesn't, as we both very well know, mean that it can't happen. Regards....John

I've been away for a couple of weeks so I'll now try your suggestions. I'll start with coil & condenser.

Have you checked to see if debris in the fuel tank gets pulled aginst the fuel screen in the tank when you increase engine speed. I had a similar problem, cleaned and relined the tank 2 yrs ago and have not had problems since.
