PTO shaft is out and not apart.....

I am having a blast learning about and working on my TO30. I got the PTO shaft off the tractor (not hard). The I&T book says to then bump or press out the shaft from the (blanking out on name)thing-a-ma-bob after removing the clip(which was a royal pain!). They shouldn't be allowed to say 'bump out'. I beat and beat and beat on it, no budge.... Good thing I am in the fabrication biz. We have a press at work that will do the job. Any tips as to what to be careful of? We do set sleeves and such on occasion so I know the procedure as setting it up in the press. Just take out that clip and 'hammer-time' right?

The wife is getting concerned it will be out of comission for a long time. She is talking of painting it and a thorough cleaning. I was thinking- I dove into this head first, and I think she is feeling the gravitational forces pulling at her also(but a bit slower).

I check this site every morning and want to say thanks to everyone who has helped me. This site is what helps the wife think I know what I am doing-haha

Bud, put your PTO lever in gear so you don't have to go fishin for the locking collar that engages it. That will hold ir in place on the front shaft so it won't fall off.

locking collar? I already have the shaft out of the tractor. I need to get the rear stuff off that is still on the shaft. I didn't have it engaged when I took it out. Am I going to have troubles now?

You won't have a problem if you don't move the tractor or any levers. The internal stuff should only move if you cause it to. You've got 6 gal. of 80/90wt. straight mineral oil to refill the common trans/hyd/diff area; just remember to replace all 3 drain plugs after you replace the PTO shaft. Don't pour in the new oil too quickly, the displaced air must exit the same fill plug. A tight fitting funnel will get you a facefull of oil if the pressure "burps" the oil in the funnel-how do I know?????

am I correct that I fill the trans and axle back up through the 'cap' right behind the gear shift? It looks liks the same as the one underneath I drained it out of.

Bud, that's the fill cap, check on the side of the housing for the level plug.
