I just started to drain the trans and axle. I don't think they have been changed in a long long time. I was worried the container I had wouldn't hold all 24 qts.- no worry- it looks like there is maybe only 4 - 5 gallons in it. I was shocked the amount of sludge coming out and what I could feel up in there! I am now thinking of taking the pan off to clean it. My list just keeps growing. I don't mind tho' I love to work on it.The wife just wants it done so she can play- I think I need another tractor already... haha

Hey Bud...THE PAN as you call it is the Hydraulic pump, so you can't just take it off like that. there is linkage inside that needs to be disconnected before you even try to get it out. If you are rough with it you will break the control valve stem and it will cost you time and money to get it fixed, so just be careful. Its not like they are fragile but they need dismantling in the proper manner. If you want more detail how to do that send me an email address and I will send you a sheet that gives all the info you need to do this.

So you are saying I can't take off the bolts and take off the cover the drain hole is on? I stuck my finger up in there to scoop out any stuff that was still clinging. I had a bit more come out from the PTO hole when I removed that, nice big hole back there to scoop out of!

You can take it off, but you have to remove the PTO shaft and the control valve from the control fork to drop it out. It isnt just a cover, that square panel that you can see is the base of the hydraulic pump. It isnt just that part that needs cleaning out either, there is probably same goo in the gearbox and the rear axle too.

The tractor parts place sold me 80W-90 oil for my trans. Is that ok? I hope so.....What the heck does that mean anyway? I've never learned that.

Bud, Just make sure the tansmission/Hydraulic oil you bought meets the Ferguson spec. I believe it's the same as the Ford N Series spec, M2C-134C. Sounds like you're enjoying this "new" tractor!

Morning Bud. Gosh you sound like your in the same spot I was about 1 year ago. I bought this 1952 TEA-20 for $ 1500. The oil pressure gauge said that I only had 6 lbs of oil pressure. Not knowing a thing about these tractors I thought that was normal, until I started to read some stuff on this site. So I decided to change all my fluids. I got an oil filter, run my tractor for 30 minutes to get her good and warm. Drained out the oil, black as your boot. When I went to change the oil filter, I noticed that the old filter was cardboard. YIKES,, I managed to get it out and cleaned the cylinder out where the new filter went into. I put fresh oil in and started her up and noticed 60 lbs oil pressure. I almost crapped my pants. So onto the Trans/Hydrualic fluid. I drained out 1 gallon. I thought wow this doesnt take much to replace this. I had bought a 5 gallon pail, so I thought I had plenty for a few changes down the road. I cleaned out the 3 spots where they told me to clean. Put 1 gallon back in and nothing on the dip stick. 1 more gallon went in, nothing. So I kept on pouring till the 5 gallons was almost gone. Well you can imagine my surprise when she took all 5 gallons and then some.Anyway you get the picturre, Just some thoughts from a rookie up in Canada. Good Luck with yours Bud

It's great to get all that gunk out isn't it. I just did a lot of work on my TO30 that I bought last year and one of the jobs was to clean out the hydralics. I could not beleive the amount of sludge all over everthing. Having all of the covers and the lift arms helped in cleaning it out. Now everything works good and I know that I am running clean hydralic oil and not guessing about when the last time it was cleaned.

good luck.

When I changed my motor oil, I flushed out the crankcase with some diesel fuel. I didn't run the engine with the diesel in there, just flushed out the oil pan. Also, I flushed out the tranny with 5 gallons of diesel. Now I know the oil reservoirs are cleaner than they were.
