Ok my TO-30 came with an IT manual. I am reading it through and through. I am not clear if any of the mechanicals share oil. The ford N forum talks of trans and hydaulics sharing. Is that only true for Ford?

The previous owner left this TO-30 in his driveway for 4 years. It was never covered or stored indoors. He said he really only used it to grade his driveway with the blade. So the water may actually have gotten in from the shifter I am hearing, eh? My TO-30 appears to have a metal 'boot' covering the bottom of the lever. I will still get some rubber to cover it and change the fluid.....

Bud, I tried to send you a post on that yesterday but I had some sort of problem with this server. Not only should you take this opportunity to change the seal and gasket, but if you have the 1-1/8" PTO shaft, you should consider changing to the 1-3/8" PTO shaft($100 for the complete kit) which is the standard today. You have to change out your fluid because it's got a lot of water in it so now's the time to do all the PTO related work.

If it has a metal boot on the gear lever it will leak in there because there is nothing else to seal it, but if you can get another type of rubber boot to go over it it will help a lot. When they are new they are ok but when you get some wear in it it will leak.

Water can get in at the shift if the boot is bad but most of the water gets in at large spring and draft control rod, just behind the driver seat.Don't try to fix it, because it is a tough job even for professionals.Just keep it covered up.(spring behind seat)If your oil is milky looking, drain it good and flush it out with diesel fuel.(lift,trans,diff. all in one)

All three share the same . Use Gl-1 80 or 90 wt. mineral oil only. Check the archives the subject has been discussed many times in great detail. You can order a rubber boot from Davis tractor suppy and other vendors.

Not adviseable to put diesel fuel in Transmission housing as it never fully drains and it would only thin your new oil down. The approved method from the factory is to drain the oil when its hot and leave it draining overnight if you can, then refil it.You do need to change the rubber boot on the gear lever though
