Rear weight ideas for a TO-35???

Definitely need to add a bit of weight to the back of the tractor -- load up the bucket, and I didn't have much traction in reverse!

Some of that is the almost-bald tires, but I know a lot was weight distribution.

Ideas on what I should use, how much it should weigh?

I was thinking pouring something concrete that hitch to the 3pt to make it easier to put on/take off -- anyone have any design ideas?

Thanks,
Matt

Go with john(UK)'s idea. I put a loader on my tractor last spring and made a drawing, too, for a 3-point box to hold concrete. Figured the box to hold 4 cu ft of concrete at 150#/cu ft = 600 lbs. The vertical centerline of the box will be 2.5' behind the centerline of the rear axle so effectively I have 2.5 ft x 600 lbs = 1500 ft*lbs of counterweight. Made the drawing to incorporate trailer hitch and chain hook. Note I'm taking in future tense--haven't got around to making the box! For now, I've hung 225# of suitcase weights on my 3-pt. blade. Works real well for now.

I have a drawing and dimensions for a concrete block that was used over here in UK in conjunction with trailer hitch, it just hooks on and off, with the 3 point linkage. If you want the drawing let me have an email address to send it to.

Dumb question, but are your rear tires fluid filled already?

I've seen folks use a 55 gallon drum filled with rock and 3pt hitch hardware attached for a convenient removable rear ballast.

We have a concrete weight with two heavy (1 1/4) diameter bits of steel rod cast into it to form a couple of hooks. With the 9 hole drawbar fitted, you can just reverse into it and pick it up. We use it with a John Deere which holds it up and still allows external hydraulic services to be used. Might not be so good if tractor hydraulics suffer from leakdown and lift cylinder has to be isolated to use external services as it woudl creep down. Best solution in that case would be to have a latching bar (e.g. pick up hitch T bar)That would allow it to be picked up and automatically locked in raised position.
