Hi K.J....I've had a day to think about your quetion, and would like to alter my answer. When someone has an idea, and can deliver it as a usable product, nomatter what, whether a genius or entrepenuer, they are no more or less than an inventor. I'm sure from Edison to Bell, money was not the "real"object, rather, a way to improve our life style. I believe, even today, that real inventors have both qualities, but think of themselves as neither. Simply inventors.

In Mr. Fergusons day, he was both. By todays stsndards, he would be nothing more than a fool for taking a hand shake agreement to a wonderful invention, the H.F. hydraulics. I think you might coin him a genius...Good luck...

I recently read a book about him called Tractor Pioneer, the life of Harry Ferguson (or something very similar) by Colin Fraser. I certainly would recommend this book for your purposes.
The short answer to your question is both. He had a vision that for mankind to make progress, the cost of food production must come down, and he put this vision into practice by making tractors and implements more effective and less expensive so that farming could be more efficient (and safer at the same time). He was also an eccentric manic depressive which makes for very interesting reading.
Good luck with your essay.
Jim

Both. Many people possess qualities of mechanical genius and are able to bring their concepts/inventions to fruition in one form or another. Ferguson was one such person. Few inventors possess the qualities necessary to reap the full economic and market potential of their concepts/inventions. To do that requires entrepreneurial skills and business savvy. That Ferguson tractors are still rolling off the line today, after many decades and after many other brands have come and gone, seems almost proof positive that Harry Ferguson was a skillful entrepreneur.

Hey Katie J. I think it is a great subject for for school essay. There is a lot of good background material here and through the link to other sites. Also researching the Q&A will provide details on specific tractors.

From seeing many such essay questions on various board sites, what you will not find is...

1) people who can read your mind, specific questions can be answered general inquiries will get no responce.

2) people who will do your data searches for you and hand you a report.

In other words. Questions like how did H.F. tractor differ from the rest, or what does TE, and TO stand for. may get a response.

Questions like I need 5 sites that tell about H.F. will not get responses.

So do your research, and I am sure the board will help clairify any details that are not clear.

Just tring to help

Jeff-OH ... not trying to cause a problem.

Just last week (09/30/03) you asked what you referred to as being an "esoteric" question on fuel, sources, and costs.

Katie's asking a question that many might consider to be esoteric. Might you simply provide her with a brief response to her question? Just your thoughts on whether Harry Ferguson was a genius, an entrepreneur, or both ... that's all she wants.

No. Problems, I thought I did answer her question. "What did I think of her writing an essay on H.F.?" Answer: I think it is great. The problem with text only, is it can come off as so impersonal. I was concerned that this post would come off this way. Sorry it apparently did. I was trying to help, by suggesting that more specifically directed questions could get more useful results for a report. The more generic general question posted got, the response I would anticipate, a general agreement about HF, some other references to seek, and encouragement. But there was little to base an essay on. I hope it works out with her.
