When I push in the clutch on my 1950 to the pto stops turning. Will a mower / bush hog still continue to push the tractor like an 8n ford? Thanks for any info. Sorry if I haven't done enough research before asking this question.

Thanks, everyone! I need a good workshop manual, and I'm awae they're avilable on this site. As mentioned before I'm an automotive tech. and have a lot to learn about tractors and tractor hydraulics. Please be patient, and I'll try not to ask too many really dumb questions.

You are correct, you need an over running clutch just like a N.

Thanks, I'll either do the over running clutch, or learn to take wide turns...

Get the pto over-ride. You'll smile every time you need to make a quick stop.

An overridding clutch has a series of pawls that allow the clutch to hold in one direction and spin in the other. When the engine is driving the bushhog it is in the hold direction. When the bushhog trys to turn the pto it is in the slip direction.

Very simple device, VERY important.

I had to buy an over ride clutch just recently.
local tractor dealer of used tractors had one for
$70 but the john deere dealer in W.V. had one for
$35 same thing so shop around. what size is your pto shaft 1 1/8 or 1 3/8 ? My pto shaft was 1 1/8
so my orc had to be 1 1/8 pto end 13/8 hog end.
Not sure about t0-30 pto shaft

Thanks for all of the info, and help with other folks. Since I'm an automotive tech., I need some education...What keeps the tractor pulling foreward, since the clutch is dis-engaged?...The hydraulics in the trans./differential???

Because the pto does not have its own clutch, the drive and pto are basically attached like the tandem drive axles on a semi. SAy you're going along with a bushhog and want to stop. You push the clutch, but the inertia from the bushhog continues to drive the wheels. The crappy Fergy brakes may not overcome this force. This is why we need the one way clutch on the output shaft.

Properly maintained, H. Ferguson tractors have good brakes! I can lock both rear wheels any time needed. The rotary cutter will still slide them though if I stop quickly without using my hand clutch.

That's the problem, it doesn't keep going when the clutch is pushed in. If your mowing, the blade acts as a flywheel and continues the drive the tractor forward by keeping the pto shaft turning back into the read differential. The wheels are powered until the blade winds down. That is what the overide clutch does for you, it lets the pto drive the attachment but not back the other way. It is a MUST for bushhog work. It will let you back up cutting, press the clutch, shift to 1st and move forward still cutting.
