Hi Folks,

I have just come into possession of what I believe is a 1954 Ferguson TEA 2085. The serial number is TEA 370229. The tractor is in reasonably good condition but has not run for a couple of years. I am looking for advice on the best way to check over the engine before I try to start it. I had planned to remove the spark plugs and pour some kerosene into the plug holes then turn the engine over with the hand crank just to make sure everything is turning freely. I was then going to drain the oil and change the oil and filter. What is the best type of oil to use in this engine, a non-detergent #30 type, or the newer detergent multi-grade oils? Does anyone know of a source for the oil filter, preferably in Canada? Near Ottawa would be even better.

I also need to replace some of the hoses, particularly the one on the top of the air cleaner which draws air through the dash grille. It has just sort of melted away with age. Anyone know of a source for it? The other hose is the one that joins the air cleaner pipe to the carb? It looks like the original hose was larger on the end that slips over the pipe and smaller at the end that fits on the carb.

Also does anyone know of a Canadian source for manuals for the TEA 20?

Enough questions for the moment I think.

Hi Richard. I'm about 2 years late responding but I didnt' see your questions until today. I have a 1954 Ferguson 2085 that my dad bought brand new in SK. I now have it in Alberta. It is Serial # TEA 372369. I have the same questions you had, but thanks to a number of replies that you have had from others I guess my questions have been answered !! Thanks to all you folks that responded with replies! Ken in Alberta.

My suggestion for oil is a high quality 10W30
detergent oil.
A good quality oil filter cartridge for this unit is a Fram #CH801BPL.
A good manual is an I&T Shop Service Shop Manual
#FE-2 covering TE20,T020 & TO30 available at a
TSC Store for $32.99.

Get yourself over to Carson's farm Supply in Perth-267-3444 , they are on hiway 43 . I have a 1952 Fergie , been here for 51 years. They can get you filters (in stock usually) had no problem getting dash hose. I am near Smiths Falls. Take care----- ----- --Bill

Richard; My TEA is # 369792-just 437 tractors before yours. I had a 9n ford prior to this tractor and never knew what was going to break next. This tractor has been very steady and reliable-I love it. Rod and Jim W are two of the most respected and knowledgable people on the Fergie sites, they will steer you in the right direction. Paul

Hi Richard,
I have several TEA2085s and live just west of Ottawa; maybe we are close by. There are lots of this model in this area and you have one of the later ones, which is good as there were many improvements made by that time.
I think your plans for the engine sound good, and I would use non-detergent 30 unless you know that the engine was recently rebuilt.
I would also take off the distributor cap and check that the plate with the points isn't sticking, and that the points themselves look decent. I have had distributors where things were quite stuck from sitting.
You can get the oil filter at UAP or even Canadian Tire (well, you may have to walk them through the process....). That rubber air intake from the dash to the air cleaner can be found but you need to "fine tune" it a bit, which isn't very hard. You will need to find a dealer (probably in the US) who sources parts from Bareco, a wholesaler who won't sell direct, but has a good website.
I think you can get the small stepped rubber hose to the carb from a Massey dealer.
You will likely see a message on here very shortly from someone willing to sell you a photocopy of a manual. The manual to get is the big 460 page one, which covers the Standard Motor Company engine. You can see it at www.classic-tractors.co.uk; it's the one described as "massive". I have a copy of this (ordered mine from them; took about 5 weeks) and it covers everything. Some of the manuals around, like the I&T shop manual, are a bit helpful but only cover the Continental engine.

To Jim W,

I was hoping that there would be other TEA 20 owners near Ottawa. I went to a dealer near Carp this morning who used to carry Massey, but now are a Case dealer but they were very helpful. They still had the Ferguson parts list on microfiche, so we were able to see a picture of what the top air cleaner hose looks like. He said that he would try to find out if he could get one.

I was able to get an paper oil filter from them that I hope will fit and a set of spark plugs.

Do you know of any Massey dealers in the Ottawa area? I think they mentioned that there was one in Perth and another in Winchester. Do you know if there are in in Pembroke. We live North of Ottawa on the Quebec side, just across the river from Arnprior.

I was wondering about the oil and whether I should use a non-detergent oil. It seems pretty hard to find these days so I have decided to go with a 10w30 standard oil from Canadian Tire initially. Once I have it running I will probably change the oil again after using it for a little while and see if I can find a non-detergent oil then.

Any ideas on who makes a non-detergent oil these days?

I will need a battery. What would you suggest for a battery? Just one that fits from Canadian Tire or something else?

It seems I still have more questions. :-)

Jim W. is a great person. I had the privalege of meeting him this past summer when I was on a business trip to Ottawa. I stopped in on my way home. Anyway, you can get most of your parts from a place in SpringBrook Ontario. Its down highway # 7 just south of Marmora. They are called McKeown Motors and they are a Massey Ferguson dealer. I own a 1952 TEA-20 and they always have what I need. They can be reached at 1-613-395-3883 ask for the parts desk and talk to Al or Bill. Hi Richard,
I know the Case dealer you mentioned; in fact a friend of mine works there.
I generally use the guys in Perth though as they are closest to me and are getting to know me (and are a MF dealer). I don't know if there are any closer to you, but I would think there are. You might want to ask anyone around who has some MFs in their yard.
Detergent oils theoretically carry the carbon etc in suspension so it comes out when you drain the oil. Normally that's good but the older engines that have been running on non-detergent oil may start leaking a bit as new detergent oil removes the old bits of crud that were acting as a "sealant". I think as long as you're prepared for that your usual Cdn Tire oil is fine. Once you use detergent oil I doubt there is any value in going back to the detergent type, although I am no expert in petro-chemistry - someone else maybe can help out on this.
As for a battery, just my opinion, but I don't see any need to be picky. I would just get the biggest one that fits. Poor old Cdn Tire won't know what to do when they try to look it up on their system but you can help them out if you take a measuring tape and insist on buying one the right size, even though it's for a Pinto or whatever....of course the kids in there now probably haven't heard of a Pinto either...

richard i have a 54 tea 2085, i use a napa oil filter 1157 i think it is i,ll check tomorrow and if its different i,ll let you know, i have been using 10-30 motor oil in mine for years ,also petro-can has a tranmission oil you might want it,s called durtran tractor and tranmission, it,s pricey at about 45 bucks for a five gallon can, you,ll need that and a 4 liter jug to fill your tranny and rear end , its a good oil do a search on it ,it meets everything for the tea.unless your trying to stay completely orignal you can get and use rad hoses for your air cleaner, mine works all the time i have a loader on it for snow in the winter and manure in the summer,they are great tractors they don,t have to be babied, but fix them when their broke and change your fluids on a regular and don,t forget antifreeze,and clean the mesh in your air cleaner when you change the oil in it ,i forget sometimes haha .good luck, they,re great tractors .

your engine plan is a good one I would use good 10W30 castrol or quaker state it takes six litres to fill it, oil filter can get from massey ferguson dealer or agco dealer may have one, good luck finding the air cleaner hose most I have seen are gone and very hard to get used lots have been taped up with duct tape, I have all the manuals and I think I sent you the prices the I and T shop manual does not cover your engine nor does the bigger Ferguson one only the 460 page TE series manual covers the TEA engines
