Since you have the dist. out set the points while it is out...it's easier. Remove #1 spark plug, put your thumb or finger over the spark plug hole. Bump the engine over until you feel compression. Now, insert a small piece of long wire into the plug hole and rotate the engine by hand until the wire(piston) is at top dead center. now place the distriutor in the desired position and follow previous instructions. Good luck & have fun!!!

FOUND OUT HOW TO DO THIS IN THE ARCHIVES. FIRST BRING THE POINTS UP TO A HIGH SPOT ON THE DIST. CAM, NOW SET THE POINTS TO .022 THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. NOW WITH THE IGN. OFF RUN THE MTR. AROUND TO THE POINT THAT THE ROTOR IS ABOUT ON THE NUMBER 1 PLUG WIRE. LOOK INTO THE TIMMING HOLE FRONT RIGHT SIDE OF THE FLYWHEEL (NOT EASY BE SURE TO TAKE THE COVER OFF.) SET THE NOTCH ON THE HOLE TO THE 6* MARK. NOW PUT TISSUE PAPER BETWEEN THE POINTS. ROTATE THE DIST. WHEN YOU CAN JUST PULL THE PAPER OUT, THATS IT. THIS IS MUCH EAISER THAN IT SOUNDS, TAKE YOUR TIME YOU WILL GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.

Chris, I assume you've not had the distributor out. As posted by steve the point setting should be done 1st. if you do not have a set of feeler gages, the thickness of a matchbook cover is close. Also there is a vacuum port in the center of the intake manifold. If you have a vacuum gage, put it to this port. Since the to is at tdc
18" of vacuum should be pretty close. Good luck.
