Not sure how to start this. I have a half converted TO35. It has a 6 V generator and a 12 V battery. As near as I can tell the 12 V battery has been there for a couple of years before I bought it. I am thinking about putting a 6 V battery back in it.
Just wondering why people did the conversion in the first place (cranking speed or what).? Sounded like a dumb question at first but the more I thought about it the more I windered. I just want to stay as original as I can with this tractor.

The previous comments are correct. I would leave the tractor 12V at this point. When I have had generators rebuilt, I have been asked whether I want it back to 6V or changed to 12. It very well may be the original 6V converted to 12. With my Ferg converting to 12 was the best thing I did. With my red tractor it is still 6V and it works fine. From my experience 6V can be hit and miss. If you still have the working tach that has the cable running off of the generator, there is an alternator that is made that has an attachment for the tach cable. It is pricey but it may be worth it to have the reliability of the alternator over generator. Good luck.

I agree with the others who said the generator may indeed be 12 volts. I have a TO-35 with 12 volt system and it still has a generator. Does your generator have the tractometer cable out of it? If so, I bet it is original. And even if it is not original, it still could be a 12 volt generator, as someone may have converted to 12 volts and installed a 12 volt generator instead of an alternator, just so they could hook up the tractometer cable, which they couldn't do with an alternator.... Just a thought. Check it out before you change. As to your question, yes, cranking speed is much faster with 12 volts. I never bother converting 6 volt tractors when I get them, as I just make sure they are in good tune and they work fine, but I certainly never convert the 12 volt ones back to 6 volt either.

I have a TO35 made in early 1958. I also have a factory "Owner's Manual" which says the tractor was manufactured with a 12V system. The generator is 12-volt, 2-brush, shunt wound 10-12 amps.

I believe I would get the generator checked. The 12V battery is there because it's suposed to be.

a 6v gen. will not charge a 12v battery you better have the gen. tested to see that it's not really a 12v

HI JOE, THE MAIN DISATVANTEGE TO ANY GENERATOR IS THAT THEY CHARGE VERY LITTLE, IF ANY AT IDLE OR LOW RPM. CHANGING TO A 12 VOLT SYSTEM USUALLY MEANS AN ALTERNATOR WHICH CHARGES ALL TIME.
