I bought my beloved 1953 to30 about 6 months ago. It wouldn't start so dealer put in new battery, worked fine. Started having charging problems about 2 months after i bought it so i had alternator rebuilt. The starter went out before i could check out the charginging system. So i had starter rebuilt. Guy said it had some wires melted in it. Anyhow all that is done but the charging system still won't work. I had alternator rechecked and he said it was good. The tractor was upgraded to a 12 volt system before i bought it. It does not have a seperate regulator. I do have 12 volts to the alternator but it does not put out anything when it's running. I was wondering if this should be a neg ground. It's hooked up that way but i see some are postive ground. Did the dealer put battery in wrong? Will it run if installed wrong? runs fine, Any ideas?

After I looked at my tractor, here is what I have: on the back side of the alternator, there is a stud terminal marked 'BAT'(battery), a plug- in with 2 terminals marked '1'& '2'. Step(1): run a 10gauge wire from 'BAT' stud to one side of your AMP gauge; the other side should connected to (+) side of your battery (maybe constant hot side of your starter switch). Step(2): run a jumper wire from 'BAT' stud to terminal '1'. Step (3): run a wire from terminal '2' to your ignition switch, that means when your tractor engine is running this wire should be hot. Now the alternator will charge your battery whenever it needs it. No more horn button ... Good Luck...

Okay, the alternator guy says the momentary switch is the answer. There are some other ways but not without some modfications. Anyway just wanted to thank all that have put in there "two cents worth", been a great learning experince for me. My area of expertise is machining, i own a small shop that does industrial machining (not automotive). I can answer questions on material and hardness and other general machining type questions. I'm not looking for work, i have enough of that but if you need some questions answered please feel free to send me an e-mail. have a one wire Delco alternator. There are two connection points on top of the alternator. One is marked #1 and the other one #2. I ran a wire from #1 to a push button horn switch and then ran a wire from the horn button to the hot side of the block on the dash. After starting the tractor you push the horn button and the alternator starts charging immediately. This eliminates revving the engine. My tractor had a one wire alternator installed, when I purchased the tractor.

I think you got it! I jumpered the alternator to #1 while it was running and it started charging. Later I idled it down to low and the alternator went off line. So i jumpered it again and it started charging again. I'm going to talk to my alternator guy in the morning and see if he has any thing else to suggest besides the horn button. Let ya'll know what he has to say.

After I read all the responses, I think I know what you have. I believe I have the same set up. I will look at the tractor tomorrow & report back what I found. I remember there is a 10-ga wire from the alternator (marked battery) stud going to the amp gauge. I will find out & report back about the rest ....

HI MIKE, SOUNDS LIKE A SINGLE WIRE DELCO CONVERSION. NELSON DO YOU AGREE? IF SO THERE SHOULD BE TWO SMALL TERMINALS EITHER ON TOP OR ON THE SIDE OF THE ALT..TO EXCITE THE REGULATOR YOU MAY HAVE TO ATTACH A SMALL JUMPER WIRE TO THE POS. BATT POST. BREIFLY TOUCH THE OTHER END OF THE WIRE TO ONE OF THE SMALL TERMINALS, WITH THE IGNITION ON. YOU SHOULD HAVE A SMALL SPARK. IF NOT, TOUCH THE OTHER POST. SMALL SPARK? REMEMBER,BREIFLY. IF IN DOUBT TALK TO THE PERSON AT YOUR ELECT. SHOP. GOOD LUCK!

When your TO-30 first came off the asembly line, it was 6-volt positive ground. When changed over to 12-volt alternator charging system, it should be negative ground. What alternator do you have?? How is it hooked up??

Not sure what alternator i have, will look at it this evening. It has a post on the back that is the only place that a wire is hooked up to it, From there it goes to the amp gage (i bypassed the gage, no help). Then to the hot side of starter selanoid(sp?). from there to positive side of battery. Mike
