I have check the following and all are ok: srark pluds and wires, rotor cap and rotor, battery cables, fule lines to carb. frome gas tank, radiator fluid. coil wires, oil in motor. All these items checked out ok, but the motor will run for three minutes or so sputter two to three time no more and stop. The motor will restart right after and then go throught the same cycle. Help Please! Rudy

Sure sounds like a fuel problem, trash or float setting, as others have advised. But one other thing: replace the condensor. You didn't say you had done that. Coil isn't it. The coil takes longer to heat up and doesn't restart right away either. Condensor is weird about that. I chased a fuel problem all over a tractor once, only to find it was the condensor. Cheap item.

Rudy,
There is a large brass plug in the bottom of the carb. With the sediment bowl valve open, remove this plug (put a container under it to catch the fuel) and the gas should come pouring out of it for as long as the bowl valve is open. (drain about a pint) It should pour out, not dribble. If it doesn't make sure that your float setting is correct and needle valve in the carb is functioning properly. I have a similar problem with my TO-30 that is caused by a lot of crud in the fuel tank that collects around the fuel out let and partially clogs it. When I open the valve on the sediment bowl, nothing comes out. I have to pressurize the tank (read blow though the gas cap vent) and then the flow will start. I put an inline fuel filter (Fram G-2) in the fuel line to the carb so I can keep this stuff out of my carb and see when I have fuel flow. Eventually it will all come out in the sediment bowl and the fuel filter.( It happens less frequently these days.) My guess is that you have a similar problem. But first make sure that your float setting is right, and that you don't have crud blocking the needle valve. You might also check the "secret filter" in the carb elbow where the fuel line comes into the carb. Hope this helps.

dirt inside take clogs up the strainer try taking it all off the sediment bowl assembly and cleaning it up good it takes quite a bit of gas to keep it running you could also blow compressed air back thru the fuel line see if it makes a difference. Also check wire where it goes into distributor sometimes they chafe and wear. My first guess would be fuel system.

Thank You Rod. I forgot to include in the items I checked was the distributor wire and it was good. I had alos flushed and wiped clean the sediment bowl assembly and the gasoline flow was strong to the carb. Please help. Rudy

might be something wrong with the carb it kinda sounds like its running out of gas maybe the carb needs to be cleaned or needs to be rebuilt

Check engine timing. My TE20 did the same thing when the timing was retarded too far. Seemed like it built up crankcase pressure and vapor locked the carb. I set the timing to the proper specs and trouble went away.

could be coil or key switch if it has one. small bits of rust get into the sediment bowl inside it and in the tank there is a screen on the assembly or should be you have to take whole thing out to see it one flake of rust or dirt can cause all kinds or problems vibration from the tractor running can cause it to move around and settle in to block fuel flow I put an inline filter in mine got it from the auto store. One way to eliminate the tank as a problem is to run it off a gas jug for a few minutes see if it still happens could be a faulty condenser but I still think gas is the issue it takes a very good steady flow to keep the old girl running.

My TE-20 had a very similar problem, and I investigated all of the items mentioned in the above followups. Finally I stumbled onto the problem. However, the TE has a different distributor than the TO. The connector terminal from the condenser to the points was touching the metal cover inside of the distributor. I never noticed it when I opened up the cap and rotor. It would run good for awhile, the start to 'starve out' then finally just quit.

It's beautiful in Tennessee today. Pristine blue skies, perfect temperature, everything wonderful, except that I'm having the exact same problem with my TO-30. So, with the help of a well-meaning neighbor, I twiddled with the fuel mixture and air mixture on the carbuerator and we really screwed things up. I don't even think it will start. If I completely shut both closed, how many turns counterclockwise should I turn open each screw, to at least get it to run?

send me an email direct and I will scan and send carb info to you I would start with main jet at 1 and 3/8ths turns and other screw at 7/8 of a turn then work you way in to richen mixture do the low speed first to get it to idle smooth then the main jet.
