Just browsing from the Ford 9N/2N/8N forum and noticed your post about the Sherman transmission. Lots of discussion over there about using Sherman's for rototillers. Sherman's were made in the step-up, step-down, and combination versions, the most popular being the combo unit. All units were installed in front of the transmission and gave additional ranges to the regular transmission (combo gives the equivalent of 12 forward and 3 reverse speeds for a four-speed transmission). This was before there were many PTO operated implements and pulling speeds were the main factor. For your purpose, you want to slow the tractor down (combo in low-range, or a step-down version), problem is this would slow the ground speed but, it will also slow the PTO speed, assuming the Ferguson's and Fords have the same rear-end design, and I think they do. Increasing the throttle to increase the PTO speed will increase the ground speed, so you are back to where you started from. I have a combo in my '51 8N and like it, but it doesn't solve all problems. Below is a good link about Shermans. Link Hope this helps.....John A
