TEA 20 (48) Broken Hydraulics

I was using a scoop on the rear linkage when I heard a bang and then found that there was no longer any lift of the hydraulics. The PTO shaft still spins, but no lift. Any ideas what I may have broken, and where should I start. Thanks

Hi Todd, Sounds bad whatever it is. I think from what you say that it is in the top end under the seat, ram cylinder probably. If you want some guidance on what to look for I have a sheet with some instructions you may like, if you send me an email address I will send it to you....Regards....John

Thanks to John(UK) I managed to get the Hydraulic Lift cover off, and found that I have blown the end off the ram cylinder housing. Is it likely that something else caused this problem or just 50 odd years of hard work? I also found a small spring about 40mm long maybe 8mm diameter,(both ends flat) when I drained the oil from the system. Any ideas where this may have come from? Also what is the best to clean the oil residue from this compartment. Thanks Todd

Hi Todd, Just one of those things I suspect caused it, shock loads are the worst, when you are travelling with an implement raised and its bouncing, its like half a ton of metal being thrown around,the hydraulics do act like a shock absober to some extent but there is a limit, so eventually something will give. The answer is to tell the drivers to slow down, its not a Formula 1 car. The spring sounds like the one on the control valve to me, dont think it can be off the one thats in there now because it wouldnt work, just maybe its had a new one fitted at some time and the spring was left in by mistake. I would think it will remain one of those mysteries we get from time to time.

Todd,bangs are never good. put some resitance on pto, if you can stop it, broken pto. If not may be parts under seat, piston,pushrod,or lifting arm. Or worst case broken pump housing $$ good luck.
