Inboard ends of TEA axles

I have before me four axles that I have just withdrawn from TEA20s. The inboard ends of three of them have a bit of a taper, and then a sort of "button" or smaller diameter part.
The fourth one though does not have this smaller diameter button; instead, it has a small groove across the end face.
(I am trying to make one good tractor here.) So my question is, should a tractor have one each of the two types of axles, or is the grooved one incorrect, like maybe from one of those Ford machines?
Mystified in Franktown,
Jim W

Both shafts usually have the "button" in the end, this should just touch the opposite one to stop any end float, the float is adjusted by the use of shims at the brake back plate. Cant remember what the end float should be now but as long as there is no pre-load or float, it should be ok.

proper preload is when you can turn one hub and the other turns in opposite direction. tighten both hubs, with gaskets, without shims, this should bind both up,install shims until you get proper preload.Like i said this job sucks

Just put mine togther, manual says not to mix, however mine were.the ends touch in the ring gear housing this keeps the axles from moving.diffacult process to do this. post back if you need this process, this job sucks.

Dunno, but I have drawn all halfshafts on my TED and also on an FE35 and all had the tapered bit on the inner end of the shafts.
