TO-20 Gear Shift pops up if tractor snags a root

The gear shift pops out but stays in gear. I have to take off the shifter (removing 2 nuts) and use
a tool to line up the shifter and replace the shifter to get back in neutral. What can be done
to fix this?

Probably the slots for the shifter ball are worn you can build up the ball with bronze and then grind it down to fit snugly in the slots. Also when replacing shifter make sure the spring on the shifter is not catching on the cover. If you really like work you can remove trans cover and then take off rear cover and remove plate which hold shifter rods in place then replace or repair the actual shifting slots. A common problem also apparently is the shifter fork for 1 and 2 it can break as mine did.
