TO30 Safety Starter Switch Clevis pin missing

I was going to replace my safety starter switch.
The manual says to remove the 4 bolts holding the switch housing, tilt up the plate, and attach a wire to something before removing the clevis pin.
Well. imagine my surprise, when I tilted up the plate, and no pin! What ever the pin held up is now down in bowels of my tractor.
What was it holding up? and can I retrieve it somehow? The battery box is blocking the view. any suggestions.

Yes its a rod that operates the switch...You can retrieve it with some messing around. Get a piece of fence wire and make a small hook on the end, then go fishing...it drops down towards the back (near the gearbox) if that fails you will have to take the engine out.

I have not had your problem but I have fished with an tiny earth magnet to retrive hardware.
