Hey James, or any one else, te's up to 32xxx have only one axle seal, oil is splashed from the diff case to lube bearing. After that they went to two seals and packed the bearing with grease, which way to go,sounds like mabe a factory update? jUST SPENT 5 HRS cleaning 55 yrs of crud from cases. Did find first problem, bolt broke on diff carrier. Parts are orded can't wait.

It was changed to the type you describe from serial number 350,000 in 1953. At the same time they increased the number of bolts around the diff/axle housing. You can update earlier axles with a seal kit that is available.

Is the seal kit you mention the one where the seal comes as part of a little pressed, trumpet shaped, metal housing????

If so I have given my mate the right one to fix my tractor if not then i'll have to find the right one. my tractor is a 1949 TEA20.

Sorry I cant comment on the shape of it as I have never seen this kit personally, but I know lots of the guys in UK and USA have used them. The kit is called "Sure seals" if that helps at all. I think from what you say though and what little knowledge I have of these seals I think you are correct with that seal.

Yes, Jim W is right on all counts - really ought to do the seals on mine - brakes are getting somewhat, er unreliable . . . . . . . next job maybe.

Yes it was a factory update alright, and the newer style is as you describe. In addition, they fitted a grease nipple at the outer end of the trumpet housing so you don't have to take the rear end apart just to grease the bearing. An excellent improvement I think, and easily retrofittable. (Although there is the risk of over greasing, and having the grease blow by the outer seal into the brake area.)

Jim; How would one prevent this overgreasing? Is there a way to tell if the bearings need grease or do you suggest only greasing it at certain intervals? Paul

cant find any written answer to that question, but usually they used to say...so many shots of grease every so many hours. As the axle does not run fast, the interval for greasing can be quite long I would have though, maybe once a month, and about 3 or 4 shots, just to top it up,because the grease cant go anywhere if the seals are ok.
