Okay here is the problem, as I was mowing today everything was going great then with a big burp of black smoke my TO-20 quit. After furthur inspection into the beast I discovered that the distributor was broken on the inside (the plate that holds the weights in to be more specific), after searching the archives I would be almost 100% sure that there is play in the cam shaft, now how difficult a job is it to do, remove the timing cover and governor, and fix this problem also is there anything else that i should do while I am in there, and just how hard is it to put back together the governor that is. Thanks in advance.

Clint....check for cam walk before you just pull it down....more than likely you will have to go inside but I would check dist first.I've seen this problem plenty of times .. If you have to go inside other things to check as you disassemble
are the governor drive assembly for wear and looseness,Cam plate could also be worn or loose. More often than not you'll find cam-plate and cam worn out. Generaly speaking its just removing and replacing .Make sure you check the cam bearings closely 1/2 the time they will have to be replaced to.Even tho you can do it without a manual I recommend you buy a shop manual so you can see the limits and spec's and you will be able to follow the r&r section rather easily, its not that difficult a job And in the manual the illistrations are easily followed and explained and its an invaulable source for future referance ....
