I was told by tractor dealer parts man spring to motor is that right guys. I had tractor since dec. I found that fergie did not have thermostat. She would smoke white smoke at a idle.Reading on this forums someone said could be because of no thermostat. Now that I put in a new thermostat and a new radator cap also.I run to get warmed up she blows antifreeze out the over flow.When she cools down to open cap antifreeze. below cooling fins. What am I doing wrong or not understanding. thank you Jackson Knight

Yes, I believe pointed end of thermostat goes into hose, at end of hose nearest engine. So you and James are correct as I recall. But I like James' counsel also on the problem. Only other thing I can think of is did you use correct pressure cap? Incorrect cap might cause the overflow, but not the steam. And if you had the white smoke before you made any changes, I'm thinking like James that you probably have water inside the combustion area. Do you have any water in your oil? You'll have to remove the plug ever so slightly and drain a little to check that, as of course the water will be on the bottom. Of course you might be able to tell the same if your oil level is rising as you run the tractor, but if you are losing your coolant you don't want to run it much to find out I suspect. Overheating is disastrous for the these engines.

Spring to motor sounds about right tho I am not familiar with the Continental engine - but the white smoke sounds more like a cylinder head problem than anything to do with lack of a thermostat.

Blue smoke is oil.
Black smoke is rich mixture
White smoke (in fact steam) is usually a failing cylinder head, or water getting into the combustion chamber from somewhere.

You may need to do some investigative surgery to find out more.
