Last week I bush hogged approx. 20 acres of what used to be some prime farm land here in Southern Illinois. It hasn't been farmed in about five years as my relatives health has not been so good. Anyway, since the field has been idle five years, you can guess how tall and thick things were. (no trees, but some tall sticker bushes and weeds) I used my 1951 TO-30 and a five foot bush hog. 1st gear, motor revered and let it eat. Had to stop about every hour or two and blow out the radiator to get all the debris out of the fins. Stopped and did oil, water checks, greased etc. My question is the temp. guage read about 230 a couple times. What is the max temp. I should worry about on this tractor? Everything appears OK on it after the workout it got.

William, The important thing about the cooling ssystem is to not let the water boil because it causes hot spots near the place where the steam bubbles form. The Continental block is notorius for cracking so you especially don't want to get it over heated. Off the top of my head, if your radiator cap is a 7 psi cap then 230F is darn near the boiling point of water.( Not sure what anti-freeze does to the boiling point but it probably raises it some) Make sure you have a good pressure cap, your radiator fins are free of chaff and debris, your thermostat is working, your water pump belt is at the right tension, and your radiator is full. (Also make sure the timing and fuel mixture are set right.)If it still runs at 230F after assuring that all the above things are OK. you probably have an internal problem (water pump or cooling passages blocked , etc.) Hope this helps.

230 is too hot. Do you have a thermostat in it? I use the 160 deg. thermostats. Be careful. Overheating can damage the block on these tractors fairly easily. Of course, your gage could be faulty too...?

It is possible the guage is bad. I just installed it a couple months ago and I over tightened and broke one of the mounting screws. Normally the tractor runs about 110-120 range. The guage I installed goes up to 280. Thanks for the info.
