i have put the engine back on my 35. (early model with original clutch, old style) the engine mated up to the tranny housing with hardly any effort. i used a old pto shaft to align the clutches. here's my question, should i be able to turn the pto shaft (rear) with the pto engaged (engine speed) and the tractor's trans. in neutral?

No you shouldnt be able to turn it, because the clutch is holding it. no connection with gearbox at all, doesnt matter if that is in gear or not, its completely seperate. (I am assuming that your tractor is a live-drive) if you press the clutch pedal it will turn then. If you are able to turn the shaft now and that is why you are asking I would think that there is something wrong up at the clutch end. Are you sure the clearance for the PTO clutch setting is correct, should be .085" and are you sure you have the correct shims in between the clutch and the flywheel, some models require 2 sets of these shims especially the early ones with the belleville springs not coil springs. I must say that I never used to like the engines going back without a struggle because invariably that meant something was wrong, sorry to be a wet blanket with that but thats how it was..hahaha

shims??? what shims?? blimey, i don't remember any shims when i took it apart and i don't have any laying around the shop.(garage)
