I looked at a Ferguson 35 tractor for sale. It was red and gray and the serial number is: FE35 5HF 173140. I think it's a 1960, is this right? Is it a Harry Ferguson or Massey Ferguson? What's the difference? What should I look for as far as trouble spots when buying one? Thanks.

Things to look for:
Rusted out manifold-common but very expensive to replace
Caborator-I am not sure what was standard on that tractor but if it is a Zeith rebuild kits are not available, replacement Zeiths cost about $150, the only other choice is to replace it with a newer one that requires an adapter.
Tail Light Brackets-can't get 'em new or used
Besides that most every thing is repairable or replaceable.

Danny:
I looks like your are correct on the year of this tractor. FE35 #173140 was built in England. The make is listed as Harry Ferguson, Division of Massey Harris Ferguson. It was built in 1960. I am not sure what the "5HF" portion of the serial number is perhaps someone else may know. You can never be completely sure of paint "as viewed" however the colors are consistant with tractors built that year, however FE-35's that were built in England were painted grey on the sheet metal, and gold on the castings. You might try this website: www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Downs/9828hf_02e.htm
for more info. The differences are really none as far as the "make" is concerned, whether it is a Harry Ferguson, or Massey Ferguson has only to do with when it was built relative to the corporate transitions that were taking place back then. The real differences of some concern is whether it is a 35 Deluxe (2 cluthes, live PTO, live Hydraulics) or standard model. I believe that tractors built in Engald had Lucas ignition systems vs Delco Remy domestic.
