To-30 temp gauge question?

i have a 52 to-30 and was wondering what all is involved with putting a temp gauge in, i only have 2 guages ammeter and oil pressure. is there a kit i can buy to add one, thanks, chris

I also have a to30 1952 i wanted the old type priginal to the tractor. I got one from Pittsburg Tractor phone #903-856-6548 ask for Jan she is very helpful then just pop out blank care fully do not put severe bends in slack as there is ether in tube ,should only tske you an hour ,Good luck Danny

My '54 TO-30 has a boss that's tapped in the hot water outlet neck for a teperature guage. I have an old fashioned mechical temperature system on mine that looks like it was done at the factory. As the other note says you can probably get an electrical sending unit but you usually need to have a voltage reducer for them as they operate at 5 volts. I'm sure the old mechanical units are available, you just have to look around. Try the parts folks on this web site or Walt's.

Chris...My '52 TO-30 had a mechical gauge that was inop. My "local" M-F dealer is 35 miles away, so I went to NAPA and got a replacement,removed the old temp bulb from the outlet neck,there was some crud packed around the old temp bulb. Since the instructions say that there should be water flow around the temp bulb, I opened up the area where the bulb sets in the outlet neck,with a drill motor and rotary file. Be very careful of the threads in the outlet neck. This is also a good time to drain and flush the cooling system.

The non-electrical temp guages are readily available I believe, at least my M-H dealer got one easily. Probably from TSCO. You do need the neck as Jerry described and not sure this was standard but also should also be available. This will give you a clean and "original" installation.

Pretty simple. (Just like me!) Go to any good auto parts store, and get a universal temp gauge. I'm fairly certain that your tractor runs in the 160 degree range. The gauge should come with a sending unit, wire, and gauge. Most all of them are for a 2" hole. You should be able to get a mounting braket, but just find a clear spot in the "dash" and cut a 2-1/16" hole, mount the gauge, run the wire to the sending unit, and presto! You should be able to find a number of suitable spots to place the sending unit, in the engine block.
