Jimbo,
My father bought a new Deluxe 35 in 1955, Dark Green Belly and grey sheet metal, Two-stage clutch,Deluxe seat,and live hyds. I spent 15 years using that tractor ( Also had a quick-attach loader) and I can tell you, the only Power Steering that came with that beast was ARMSTRONG. Ha! Ha!

Yo! firedog,

Thanks for the input. I checked my 35 and guess what? Mine has that ARMSTRONG power steering too! Thanks for the chuckle.

The reason for my initial question "What makes..." may be a misunderstanding on my part. If you refer to the serial number listings, Gas Deluxe is listed starting in 1958. Does that mean it was unavailable until 1958 or that starting in 1958 they were all Gas Deluxe? My TO35 is a 1957 model (serial # 172795) and has the two-stage clutch but not power steering. Evidently power steering was an option. My previous tractor was a 8N so when I bought this one I was surprised and tickled that the hydraulics was available 100% of the time requardless of the postion of the PTO lever.

Anyway, the response to my question has been very good and educational for me. Thanks.

Jimbo, I have a 1955 Ferguson TO-35 Deluxe,gas. Its a 'green belly' (green casting, grey sheet metal). This was the first year for the 35. Made by Massey Harris Ferguson. They were painted this way in '56' also, before changing to red and grey in '57'.

Hey Roger, very good possibility that your 35 was 'special ordered' that way, though I can't figure why. I always thought Sherman trans. were after market but I have a TO-30 that was ordered with a step up & down. Have fun.

Roger, the 2 stage clutch is the main difference in the Deluxe model, along with the 4 gauge dash, padded seat and optional power steering. Maybe your tractor had the clutch replaced with a single stage along the way for some reason.

Hi Mike;
Yeah, I was surprised when I discovered it was a single-stage clutch when I split the tractor to do a clutch job. Initially, I too thought the clutch had been converted, but when I looked at my parts manual, the transmission used with the two-stage is different than w/ the single-stage. Same goes for the bell housing, if memory serves. It's got the three-position PTO lever, however. I'm guessing that, for some reason, it was probably ordered that way from the dealer.
Still scratchin'...

Or maybe your two stage clutch is incorrectly adjusted, or stuck.

Jimbo;
In addition to the two-stage clutch that James mentioned, the TO-35 Deluxe also had a 4 gage dash which included the Tratormeter, padded seat with a back, and power steering. Those were the most common differences though there may have been other options available that I'm not aware of. I have a Deluxe but with a single-stage clutch and had been re-painted yellow. I've yet to find out why it doesn't have the two-stage clutch. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Does your serial number reflect a single stage or double stage clutch? My serial starts with SHM.
S=Normal width chassis
H=Petrol 6.6:1 (high altitude)
M=Dual Clutch (F=single)

Yeah, mine's a Deluxe but to power steering. Did come with air conditioning, though.

Maybe, (Just MAYBE) that tractor is like some that have passed through our hands over the years. It could be one that was assembled from "cannablized" tractors. A standard 35, with the sheet-metal (Dash included), seat and possibly the power steering off of a Deluxe. That would explain the single stage clutch, in the Deluxe form. Last night, I bought a Massey-Ferguson 50, that was built out of a Massey Harris 50, and an MF 50, with the hood and grill off of a Ferguson 40. It's for parts, and I'll try to send the parts back to the "correct" tractors.

John;
I thought the same thing at first, too. But, after some research and observaton, I found that: the power steering pump is gear driven off the timing gear and the power steering box is different than the manual steering box; the transmission and the bell housing differ between the two models; the four-gage dash includes the Tractormeter which is gear driven off the generator; and, if memory serves, the front axle and the radius rods differ between the two models. I suppose it's possible to add all these things to a standard model, but, it sure seems like a lot of work. Then, the whole thing was painted yellow. As far as I can tell, the only missing feature on my Deluxe (though not a minor omission) is the two-stage clutch. If only we could travel back (and forth!) in time... Good luck with your new toy(s)!

Sounds like you,ve got a Deluxe. Is the yellow paint original? We had one a few years ago, that was a "mower tractor" from a military installation. (Jefferson Proving Grounds, Madison, Indiana). It was yellow, with red military I.D. #'s. It had led a pampered life of mowing road easments, and powerline clearings. They were serviced at a local dealer, in accordance with Massey-Ferguson's hourly maint. schedule. No tractors ever get this much care and attention. In a few days, Big Dean will be back on line. Ask him. This guy knows more than all the rest of us put together.

As far as I know it's mostly the hydraulics, on the Deluxe version, you have a two-stage clutch, so PTO remains operational when you push the clutch half way down, but the tractor stops forward (or rearward) motion.

On the standard version, there is only a single stage clutch, so pushing down on the clutch stops the PTO, and forward/backward movement.

There are probably other differences, too, but I'm not that familiar with the 35 series.

Hydraulics are same on both models, just dual clutch to give live hydraulics and PTO, cushion seat and a few small differences depending on the area its in.

John;
When I first got my tractor the power steering pump was broken and in a box. I used the tractor for over a year before I got a new pump. I gotta tell ya, power steering is definitely not a "small difference". :-)

hahaha..well over here in UK the 35 was never supplied with power steering, we must be stronger than you guys, either that or MF think we are. If you had Power steer fitted and no power it would be harder that if it hadnt got it fitted at all.

Yes, I typed hydraulics by mistake - realised afterwards, but everyone seems to know what I meant.
