TO-20 Backfire

Have a TO-20 that I was using to bushhog with today and after running for close to an hour the engine began cutting in and out and the longer I ran the worse it got finally to the point where it backfired and quit, now it wont restart any help would be appreciated.

Ok I got the tractor to run long enough to limp it back to the house and after looking it over I pulled off the dist. cap and found that the button on the rotor has broken off. This same thing happened a few years back and i hate to say it but I cant quite remember what I did to fix the problem any other help from this point would be appreciated.
