Hi Rod - Engine will work with readings above 60 or so. New, you should get 130 or so. More important is relatively even readings between cylinders - +/-10 lb . Sometimes a squirt of oil down each cyl will bring the readings up, to help it start better; also a good check when testing, to tell if low readings are due to valves or rings. Oil will raise the compression if rings are weak, but won't change valve leakage. Have you checked spark timing? I've had timing chains/belts slip, and gears fail, causing timing to be off, even with good spark. If you don't have a timing light, a poor man's sub is a long spark plug wire from #1 hole to near the flywheel or crank pulley timing marks. As you can tell, I'm not familiar with your particular engine, but the principles apply to all gas engines. And a stupid question, but one which cost me 15 hours of frustration - is there any possibility of diesel fuel mixed with the gas? Ours had enough gas in it to smell like gas, but wouldn't ignite.
