I have and old TEA (I think) Massey Ferguson tractor that I would like to know how old it is.

I think it is a 24HP with the oil filter is on the right hand side inclined at around 15 degress down.

The Engine Serial Number is

S56920E

and I think the serial number on the plate under the steering wheel is 295

there is a number 2 6 ? 9 (not sure what the ? is)with a 3 below vertically on the RHS by the hydralics dip stick.

Also what oil should I use in the motor ? Are the new synthetics Ok or should I use standard 30W40 oil

Thanks for the help

With that engine number its an 80mm engine rated at 24.9hp but as James UK has said, you need ALL he number to date the tractor properly. Taking a stab at it I think it could be a 1949 model from what you have told us. Stick with the 30W40

Ross,

It is a Ferguson - not a Massey Ferguson, and is fitted with the Standard engine.

The 2 6 ? 9 number indicates day, month and year of casting, so the ? will be the tens unit of the year.

The serial number off the plate on the dash may be longer than just 295, and should be preceded by three letters, eg TEA, TEC, TED, TEE, TEL, TER, etc. - this serial number will allow you to date the tractor more precisely using the Serial Numbers section in the Research & Info section in the panel to your left.

As far as oil goes - see the archives - the subject has been done to death, and comes up once or twice a week, still.
