TO 30 No power and now not running

I have a very good feeling that my coil has gone bad. All I usually get is a weak yellow spark with the occasional good blue one.

I had looked over everything I have done, retimed the ignition, rebuilt the carb, cleaned the gas tank, and verified that the governor was working this is the only thing I can come up with that is causing the engine not to start. It will make a small attempt to fire sometimes but will not stay running.

I have tried jumping from a 12 volt battery directly to the starter, as to not cause any 6 volt problems, and with the engine spinning better I can get one or two pops but that's it.

Am I going in the right direction with replacing the coil? I'm sure it won't hurt.

Tom Have you checked your point gap or tried a new condencer Be sure that your spark plugs are ok. Are you on # one cyl on TDC compression stroke with the rotor pointing to #one wire Hope this helps Ken

Ken,

I put in a new condensor and rotor, wires and plugs. It was running okay then just not quite full power. This is why I am suspecting that the coil has started to go. Not giving enough zap when needed or perhaps not firing on the next cyclinder. I didalso correct the ground not being positive. Could this screw up the coil?

When you changed the wires did you put new ones back with #1 at approx. 11 o'clock and rest in counter clock direction? Also, it sounds like the timing is off 180 degrees. Make sure compression stroke in #1 is starting when rotor is pointing at approx. 11. I found the same thing with my TE20 the last owner had it timed 180 off and when I changed the wiring, and corrected the wires out of dist. cap it would not start only backfire once or twice. Once I corrected the 180, it worked like it should.

I did check all of the wires and they are correct. On my TO30 number one wire lines up at about 7-8 oclock with the timing at 31 degrees. I just put on a new coil and also found one of my new plugs was bad so after I get the battery rechaged I will attempt to get it running tommorrow.
