Rear Main Leak

My 1950 TO-20 has developed a oil leak that is dripping out of the cotter pin hole in bell housing. I guess this would be the rear main seal,
right? Anyway, how hard is it to fix this leak without pulling the motor?

It's really not that hard to split the tractor. Just make sure it is well supported. If the Z-120 is similar to the Z-129 (which is what I'm familiar with), the rear main seal is in a stamped steel carrier that bolts to the back of the block, with a gasket around it. You have to remove four little bolts from behind the engine and two from inside, so you have to remove the oil pan to do this. It's important to make sure the face of this seal carrier is perfectly flat, so it seals well agains the back of the block, or it will leak no matter how well the seal itself works! Mine had bent around the bolt holes, and would not seat flat agains the block. I used a hammer to flatten it all out, and my Z-129 doesn't leak at all. Good luck!

Thanks for the info! I did split the tractor about 8 years ago to do a clutch job. The seal wasn't leaking then. Oh well, time to get dirty!

You can't fix this without splitting the tractor, so the answer to your question is "Impossible".

Or at least, it is impossible to change it on the Standard engine without splitting the tractor.
