Would any one be able to help with a wiring diagram for converting a dynamo to an alternator on a TEF 20 fergie,
and could you recommend a suitable size alternator?.

Steve, I could help you with the diagram - next week - but of more importance is the fact that with the lower revving diesel engine, your alternator may never reach a fast enough rotation speed to provide any charge!

My TED only starts charging at half throttle - I have a smaller belt pulley to fit, and will see what difference it makes, but I think you should consider alternator revs before you buy anything.

Does anyone know the tickover and max rpm figures for the diesel? And which diesel do you have Steve, the Standard 23C or the Perkins?

Idle speed of 20c Diesel should be 475rpm, max engine speed should be 2200rpm

If the diesel turns over more slowly, you would think the original generator would have had the same problem.
Is it possible they fitted a larger diameter crankshaft pulley to remedy this?
If that's what they did then the alternator conversion wouldn't be too difficult.
Here is an alternator conversion I did on my TR3, which has a similar mounting arrangement. You can see the smaller pulley for the wide belt.

Sorry for delay in replying - have been out of contact - an alternator does not produce any charge worth having until it is doing about 1000rpm, whereas the old dynamos produce a worthwhile charge at much lower revs, and this charge is then handled by the voltage regulator.

To calculate what your alternator rpm would be, put a chalk mark on the belt, and use a stop watch and a counter to establish the belt rpm at a known (low as possible) engine speed. Once you know that, and the belt length, you can turn it into a 'feet per second' or 'cm per second' equivalent linear speed.

Once you know the linear belt speed, and the diameter of the pulley you are going to fit on the alternator, you can calculate the speed range the alternator will see (if you fit it) at normal tickover and max. rpm and therefore what the likelihood of it charging will be.

Sounds long winded, but isn't.

I would have thought it would be easier to change pulley size on Alternator/dynamo than try to get a pulley to fit a crankshaft.

Why would the speed of the water pump change if you change the diameter of the dynamo or alternator pulley? The water pump speed would only change if you change dia. of crankshaft pulley surely.

Oh, typed too fast. I was still wondering if the crank pulley diameter might happen to be bigger on the diesel by design.
Could be the water pump does a fine job turning just a little bit slower. (Now I see that the rpm is not much different than a TEA, if at all, so my comments were moot anyway.)
